Managing climate risk across a global wine supply chain
How Laithwaites identified supplier climate risk to support procurement and sourcing decisions.
The Challenge
Climate change was turning supplier resilience into a business risk
Laithwaites needed to understand which of its 34 supplier vineyards across France, Spain, Portugal and Italy faced the greatest exposure to drought, heat stress and extreme weather.
Assessing every location manually was impractical. The business needed a fast, consistent method that could scale across the supplier base while identifying where deeper analysis was justified.
The Solution
RedLines combined portfolio screening with targeted financial analysis
RedLines Scan rapidly assessed all 34 supplier vineyards using a consistent methodology across relevant climate scenarios and time horizons. The resulting exposure heat map showed where risks were concentrated and provided a defensible basis for prioritising further investigation.
The eight highest-risk vineyards were then progressed to RedLines Pro, which combined site-level climate projections with relevant operational and sourcing exposure data to quantify how changing conditions could affect productivity, supply continuity and future sourcing costs.
Individual supplier reports translated the findings into clear, site-specific evidence, supporting structured conversations with producers about resilience measures, future supply arrangements and long-term sourcing strategy.
The Outcomes
A clearer supplier risk picture and foundation for long-term resilience
34 supplier sites screened and prioritised in under 2 weeks
8 high-risk vineyards assessed with individual supplier reports
Outputs informed a 3-year supply diversification and producer engagement strategy
