Prioritising climate resilience across a geographically diverse estate
How The R&A built a consistent view of climate risk across its golf estate.
The Challenge
Extreme weather was affecting operations, with no systematic way to prioritise response
The R&A manages more than 30 golf courses and venues across the UK and Ireland, where flooding, extreme heat and coastal erosion can affect playability, infrastructure and operational continuity.
Each site had a different risk profile. The leadership team needed a consistent methodology and comparable outputs across the estate to support investment decisions.
The Solution
RedLines Pro quantified estate-wide exposure and identified investment priorities
RedLines Pro applied a consistent assessment methodology across more than 30 golf courses and venues, allowing materially different sites to be compared on a like-for-like basis.
Each venue was assessed under standard SSP scenarios and across multiple time horizons, covering relevant hazards including flooding, extreme heat and coastal erosion. Site-level asset and operational exposure data were then used to quantify the potential financial impact at each location.
The analysis showed how risks varied by site, hazard and timeframe, distinguishing venues facing immediate operational pressure from those with more significant longer-term exposure. Results were consolidated into a board-ready estate summary and detailed venue-level data pack.
The Outcomes
A clear evidence base for estate investment decisions
Full estate assessment completed within 4 weeks
12 sites identified for resilience investment and adaptation planning
Outputs informed the 10-year estate strategy and capital allocation framework
